Marriage
Under Amendment XIV, Section I, all citizens of the United States of America are to be afforded equal protection and rights under the law. These would not be "special" protections or "special" rights but equal protections and equal rights. If a practicing heterosexual can be married for whatever reason, then marriage is then recognized by all foreign, federal, state, and local governments. This is true whether or not
Accordingly under Amendment XIV, a homosexual couple should be able to marry for whatever reason and that marriage should then be recognized by all foreign, federal, state, and local governments. By due process, this should be true whether or not
Get the picture? Your personal prejudices, superstitions, and biases are irrelevant. Just as those of Helms, Thurmond, and all those other Luddites are irrelevant. The First Amendment not only guarantees freedom of religion but also and far more importantly, guarantees freedom of expression. The First Amendment was intended to guarantees freedom from religious persecution even when it is a religion doing the persecuting. Remember that many our founding colonist were religious refugees. The First Amendment was intended to keep one religion forcing their beliefs on everyone else. I submit that we would all benefit immeasurably if we had even more "Freedom from Religion".
The sanctioning of a marriage by a religious belief system, especially Christianity, is, also, irrelevant. Marriage is not the sole domain of any given religion. Marriage ceremonies can be civil or secular humanist. Marriage existed for thousands of years before any of the currently religions were even in existence; back when there were many gods, perhaps when there were no gods at all. There are Christian, Jewish, and Islamic sects that currently or in the recent past advocated multiple spouses, consorts, and/or concubines (a common argument against recognizing same sex marriages). Did you know that even the Catholic Church has liturgicals written for same sex marriages? These are all excellent examples of why there should be a clear separation of Church and State in this matter. Christianity is subject to more trends and fashions than even the most flightiest queen. Biologically, the most common model of human mating strategy is the pair bonding. It is a species trait (present in not less than 60% of the population) of humans and probably has a frequency rate comparable with male and female sexes, that is upwards of 96% (about 4% of the human population are neither "true" male nor "true" female but have physical traits of both or do not have physical traits of either). Therefore, why would a same sex marriage involve more than two people in any way, shape, or form? The argument about reproduction is irrelevant, as well. There are a number of children born outside of marriage. In addition, there countless homosexual parents already, either by the usual way (just like straights), by standard fertility technologies (just like straights), or by adoption (just like straights), but there are countless childless heterosexual couples – either by choice or by circumstance. You need to look no further than former Senator Robert Dole and his wife, Elizabeth as an example. Are they immoral, godless people simply because their marriage did not produce a progeny? By the way, both of them are divorced from their previous marriages – so even straights do not even get marriage right sometimes. Homosexual persons are your mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, cousins, nieces, nephews, spouses, and friends. They are so much more than just sex. They live and breathe. They love and hate. They worry about their mortgage payments, car payments, insurance payments, and taxes just like everyone else does. They wash their cars, mow the grass, and play with dog, just like everyone else does. Homosexuals even laugh and cry over pretty much the same things, too. They are like everyone else in every way that is truly important so treat them like everyone else! There was a time when mixed race marriages were banned. I hear the same excuses now about same sex marriage as I did about interracial marriages. |
